Social media has connected people from different parts of
the world. We can collaborate, share
ideas, and tell our stories to moms who we haven’t even met face to face. We are able to relate to moms and empathize
with them even if we haven’t seen them in person. Some of the friendships we have now might
have started from Facebook and Instagram.
We may meet or discover a person online, but it does not mean that these
interactions are devoid of emotions.
When we invest a great deal of our time on our online activities and
correspondences, it is not unlikely that there will be an attachment to people
we talk to.
Modern technology does not have to take away the human
experience. As for me, I don’t see it
that way. In fact, because of technology
and social media, I am able to be a part of this magazine as a contributor even
though I am on the other side of the world.
There is a sense of connection with other moms from the publication as I
feel like I have a glimpse of their lives and personalities by what they post
on social media. Of course, not all that
we see in social media are real, but through pictures, we are transported to
faraway places and countries. After all,
a picture paints a thousand words.
We also hear stories of families who get reunited through
the help of social media, and also of worthy causes that have been won and
championed through clicks and shares of concerned netizens. Gone are the days when we have to pay a hefty
price on overseas phone calls. Those who
work abroad can see their loved ones through video calls. This is such a huge deal because imagine if
you are a mother or a father to a newborn, and you have to leave your child to
work in a far location. It would be so
sad to be away from your family- but due to modern technology, these parents would
not be so lonely anymore. Seeing their
families’ faces on their mobile phone screen can lessen their longing and
sadness.
The challenge is for us to use and view technology as a tool
and not as a master. There is no other
way for technology to go, but to move forward.
We can never slow down technology, in fact it is growing at a rapid
pace. Modern technology does not have to
be a nuisance to human relationships, it does not have to eliminate
face-to-face contact with our loved ones.
Social media does not have to be about narcissism, as long we put into
consideration the people who read our content.
Let’s use technology to connect, inspire, and bring value to other
people and to our fellow moms.
“Technology is best when it
brings people together.” Matt Mullenweg.
